Tinubu Announces Buhari’s Death, Sends Shettima, Gbajabiamila to Escort Body Home

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at about 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness.
In a statement issued by the State House and signed by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the former leader, describing the moment as one of national mourning.
The President has spoken with the late President’s widow, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, to convey his condolences and has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and his chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.

“As a mark of respect for the departed leader, President Tinubu has ordered that flags fly at half-staff nationwide,” the statement said.
Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, had previously ruled the country as military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985. His tenure, both as a military and civilian leader, marked a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history.
