Serena Williams not after record at US Open

By Elijah Odetokun

Serena Williams has said she’s not after records after her straight sets first round US Open win over Kristie Ahn on Tuesday, winning 7-5, 6-3.

Victory at this year’s US Open would be William’s seventh US Open and 24th Grand Slam title to tie Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles.

The 38year old Williams who overcame losing the first set to win the first round has downplayed the talks of chasing records at the Flushing Meadows.

“Yeah, in a weird way I feel like every time I come here I’m being told I broke another record. I felt like I had something last year.

Maybe it was a tie for Chris Evert. “But it’s cool. I don’t think I appreciate it enough, which is unfortunate.

But I’m in the middle of a Grand Slam, so it’s not the time to be focused for me on records when I’m thinking about winning a tournament.”

she said after her first round win. Her last Grand Slam title was 2017 Australian Open when she was pregnant with her daughter Olympia.

She has played four finals afterwards and lost all.

The absence of top stars like Ashleigh Barty and Simona Halep has improved her chances and made her one of the favourites to win.
