Senate to halt implementation of speed limiter

The Senate has mandated its committee on Federal Character to look into the introduction and imposition of speed limiter on vehicle owners by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

The decision followed a point of order (44) raised by Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) on the need to halt the implementation of the policy.

Melaye observed that bearing the economic recession in the country, imposing the policy on Nigerians is tantamount to increasing their pains, adding that the situation in the country presently does not support any policy that will worsen the plight of citizens.

Melaye agreed that although introduction of the speed limiter by the commission is in good fate as it is aimed at saving lives and minimizing the rate of accidents on the roads, he noted however that since the device will not be installed free of charge on vehicles, the effect will not be favourable to Nigerians.

“This means that if you own two vehicles you are expected to purchase two of the device to install in each of the cars, Mr. President this is outrageous and demands that the senate take a drastic measure to halt the implementation of this policy which is not economy friendly. The policy Mr. president the policy is coming at wrong time.”

In response, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, mandated the Senate Committee on Federal Character led by Senator Tijjani Kaura to look into the matter and come up with a position in two weeks.
