Rivers PDP Chairman welcomes special amnesty programme for cultists

The Chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Felix Obuah, has said that the state government’s decision to package a special amnesty programme to contain renewed cultist activities and militancy in the Ogoni area of the State was a welcome development.

Chief Obuah applauded the State governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his wisdom and magnanimity to give those cultists a second chance, adding that the gesture was the hallmark of good governance and a sincere leadership.

The PDP Chairman noted that the successes recorded in other parts of the State by the amnesty programme had convinced all those who were skeptical about the programme, especially the opposition leaders in Ogoni that Governor Wike meant well for the people.

Chief Obuah said that there would not have been need for the special amnesty programme and the huge resources required for it, if the opposition politicians had not politicized the programme, alleging that “it was the same cultists used by the opposition to rig the December 10, 2016, legislative re-run election in Ogoni that continued to disturb the peace of the land.

He blamed those he described as desperate opposition political office seekers for the resurgence of cultism in Ogoni, saying that they must be held accountable for all the havoc and blood of innocent Ogonis wasted to actual personal interests.

He, however, appealed to the Ogoni people and their leaders in particular to prevail on their sons and wards who were members of cult groups to take advantage of the new opportunity to surrender their arms and key into Governor Wike’s amnesty programme, stressing that the incumbent administration meant well for everybody irrespective of party affiliations.

Commending the efforts and contributions of the security agencies in complementing the efforts of the State Government, Chief Obuah said they should go ahead to consolidate the relative peace achieved by the amnesty programme and not to rest on their oars, saying that the fight against crime must be an ongoing activity for there to be total calm, co-operation and harmony among sheds of opinions.

The PDP Chairman said that the PDP leadership in the State would continue to preach and tread the path of peace and promote mutual co-existence in all parts of the State as a hallmark of exemplary leadership.
