Polls: AU, ECOWAS Observers Meet Jonathan

International observers, on Monday afternoon, met with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, just as collation of results of the presidential election was underway, in Abuja.

 

The observers, who spoke through former Ghanaian President, John Kuffour commended the country for a successful voting exercise, which they adjudged as peaceful and transparent.

 

They briefed Jonathan on their findings during the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

 

Kuffourtold State House correspondent: “We have been in the country with our groups observing the elections. We have come to a point where from what we have seen that the elections have been peaceful, transparent and credible up to yesterday.

 

“We appreciate the processes are not yet done, till the results are declared, then, of course, the aftermath of the declaration.”

 

Kuffour, who commended the leadership of the country for the peaceful conduct of the polls, urged Nigerians to remain calm as the results were announced.

 

“But we have come this far and we wanted to give an interim reports to the authorities that mandated us to come and to the world, and to Nigerians in particular, to let everybody know that Nigeria, so far, has been at peace with the process.We appeal to Nigerians to continue in this mood throughout the entire process, so that at the end of the day the people of Nigeria will be satisfied with themselves that they used the process to get the government they want and they deserve”, he said.

 

Besides, the former Ghanaian leader said: “Nigeria succeeding will be not only in Nigeria, but ‎to West Africa and to the continent.We will all be made proud of the success here achieved by Nigerians for themselves and for all of us.

Others at the meeting were Ambassador Aisha Laraba, chairperson of the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Amos Sawyer of Liberia, leader of the African Union observers in Nigeria to the election and BariliMuluzi of Malawi, leader of the Commonwealth of Nations team.
