Police arraign man, 25, over alleged cell phone theft

The police, on Thursday, arraigned a 25-year-old man, Ekundayo Emmanuel, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a cell phone.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a charge of stealing.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp Moyosola Adesola, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct. 1 at about 11:30 a.m. at Falegan area of Ado-Ekiti.

She said that the defendant stole an Infinix phone, valued at N50,000, belonging to one Adediwura John.

Adesola said that the offence contravened Section 302(1) (a) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

She urged the court to adjourn the case to enable her study the file and assemble her witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him, while his counsel, Mrs Adunni Olanipekun, urged the court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Franca Olaiya, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20,000, with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case till Nov. 8 for hearing.
