Osinbajo pays unscheduled visit to Lagos Airport

Acting President Yemi Osibanjo on Thursday paid an unscheduled visit to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

His visit to the airport, which caught many airport workers and aviation parastatals by surprise, is the first of such visit by either a Vice President or President in acting capacity.

Osibanjo, dressed in navy blue attire with black shoes and cap to match, arrived the international terminal at about 3.00 pm in company of security operatives.

The Acting President, who was in Lagos for other engagements, took time off carry to out on-the-spot assessment of facilities at the international wing of the airport.

From the Presidential Wing where the convoy took off, the Acting President in company of the Minister of State, Aviation, Hadi Sirika were conducted round the check – in areas, baggage carousel axis, Visa Issue on Arrival unit, where he specifically instructed official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to switch on the baggage reclaim equipment.

At the international terminal, the Acting President sought up to date knowledge of facilities and what would be required to fix the travelator at the boarding gate areas.

Apparently bewildered, aviation personnel struggled to provide clues to the Acting President on how to fix some of the sore points at the airport.

Aviation workers who gathered in groups to take a glimpse of Osinbajo, remained bewildered as to why an Acting President will tour facilities at the airport .

The Acting President did not grant any interview.
Sources hinted that the visit of the Acting President may not be unconnected with the new thinking in government to upgrade airport and air navigation infrastructure.

The Acting President also inspected the conveyor belt, which was commissioned in 2014.
Osibanjo, however did not inspect the new international terminal constructed by China Civil Engineering Construction Company.
