NULGE reiterates call for council autonomy
The national leadership of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has vowed to map out necessary measures that will speed up its request for local government autonomy.
The Union made this known when the National President of NULGE, Comrade Ibrahim Kheele addressed some newsmen and members of Anambra State House of Assembly in Awka.
According to him “Local Governments pray important roles in developing the nation. We want independent of local governments where they will be allowed to elect their representatives at all times. We are expected to deliver some basic functions and development for the people at the grassroots, but we couldn’t due to malfunctional system in government. We are incapacitated to deliver our mandate, providing primary health care and other services.”
Describing Local governments as the inclusive mechanism for inclusive development, Comrade Khaleel urged National and State Houses of Assembly to speed up action and ascent to the bills for local governments autonomy, so as to enable them get intervention from State and federal government.
Responding, the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Rita Mmaduagwu commended them for championing the cause the would improve the lives of the people.
Mmaduagwu, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon Harford Oseke noted that “The agitation for local governments autonomy is not new, it is good for the masses which is for the betterment of the masses. ”
The bill has been passed in the National Assembly, but has not been presented to states for confirmation. Once it gets to Anambra, we will not delay in giving consent and support. Anambra state will not be a barrier,” Speaker added.
Mmaduagwu stated that Anambra had been in the forefront of championing the progress and welfare of the people.
