NMA canvasses free treatment for depression cases

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Kwara branch has advocated free treatment by the three tiers of Government in Nigeria for patients afflicted with depression to reduce cases of suicides among Nigerians.

The state chairman of the NMA, Dr. Kunle Olawepo, made the call in a statement he signed in llorin on at the weekend, commemorating 2017 celebration of World Health day.

Every 7th day of April annually is set aside and celebrated globally as world health day as directed by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The statement which noted that many Nigerans are currently suffering from depression and other related illness which normally lead to suicide in many cases.

Olawepo in the statement noted that the introduction of free medical treatment y Government and organisations will save the lives of many people who ca contribute to nation’s building.

The NMA which described depression as an illness characterized by at least two weeks of undue sadness, loss of interest in activities and lack of energy said deserves to be treated free.

The Chairman of the Association in the statement expressed sadness that about 50 percent cases of major depression still go untreated which he said is responsible for high rate of suicide.

To prevent depression, the NMA advised Nigerians to eat at regular interval, always embark on relaxation, regular exercise, avoid taking liquor and use drugs prescribed by Health professionals.
