In a collaborative effort aimed at boosting meteorological service delivery, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have organized a 5-day capacity building workshop on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and its application in climate services.

The five-day workshop, with the theme Advancing the Use of Numerical Weather Prediction in Operational Forecasting in Nigeria is taking place at the NiMet headquarters Abuja, and is set to provide participants with essential tools and knowledge in the field of NWP.

The Director General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu who expressed enthusiasm in his opening remarks, described the training as a unique opportunity that sees the collaboration of NiMet and WMO to enhance the capacity of the technical staff of the Agency.

Prof. Matazu underscored the pivotal role that NiMet plays in supporting the sustainable development of the nation, as the Agency offers diverse services including public weather forecasts catering to various stakeholders and the general public, government support services, supplying critical data to policy makers, as well as customized services tailored to specific sectors of the nation’s economy.

Prof. Matazu added that NiMet’s services extend beyond Nigeria’s borders, encompassing African nations such as Sierra Leone and Liberia, which it provides daily weather forecast as well as Gambia, Niger and other African nations it renders services.
