NGO distributes food items to widows for Christmas
Ahead of Christmas celebration, Neighbour’s Keeper International Initiative, a non- governmental organisation, has donated food items worth more than N400, 000 to 240 widows in Suleja.
The chairman of the organisation, Mr Edet Elelei,according to NAN, said on Thursday that the donation was part of programmes included in the inauguration the executive officers of the organisation.
According to Elelei, the organisation’s aim is to promote mass employment, better standard of living, community peace and progress through economic empowerment for the less privileged in the society.
He said the activities of the organisation were targeted at stimulating wealth creation capabilities for rural and urban dwellers as well as promoting job creation by supporting the indigenous small scale business.
Elelei noted that since the Federal Government had shown interest in encouraging cooperative societies as a method of empowering the grassroots, the organisation had also taken steps to involve widows in a cooperative and empowerment trainings.
“Government cannot do everything, in view of the present economic reality, we ought to help the needy and the vulnerable to strengthen government’s commitment to eradicating poverty,’’ he said.
Also speaking, Mrs Kachi Ibeh, Director of programmes of the NGO, said the organisation “is non-political, non-tribal and non-religious’’.
Ibeh said the organisation would always assist the needy in the society irrespective “of their age, religion, political affiliation or ethnic group.
One of the widows, Mrs Benedeth Alekwe, said she was happy to be a member of the organisation, noting that she had a better view of the future of her children since she registered with the organisation.
Similarly, Mrs Gladys Offordile, a widow, commended the leaders of the organisation for sharing food items, especially at Christmas and New Year festive time.
The highlights of the inauguration included the distribution of bags of rice and salt, among others, to the widows.
