NAICOM, NCAA collaborate to strengthen aviation insurance framework

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) have inaugurated a joint Technical Committee to address critical aviation insurance matters and ensure robust protection for stakeholders in the sector.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the NAICOM office in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in fostering collaboration between the two organisations.
Dr. Usman Jankara, Deputy Commissioner Technical at NAICOM, represented the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, at the event. In his remarks, Dr. Jankara highlighted the Commission’s commitment to regulating the insurance industry in a way that balances the interests of operators and policyholders.

He reaffirmed NAICOM’s dedication to ensuring fair compensation and indemnification for third parties affected by aviation incidents.
The Technical Committee is tasked with addressing various critical areas, including verifying the insurance certificates and related documents of airline operators and service providers, providing technical support to the NCAA on insurance matters, and resolving complaints from airline operators regarding coverage and services. The Committee will also review minimum insurance cover requirements for aviation operators and facilitate regular training and awareness programmes for stakeholders.
Mrs. Rominiyi F. Dorcas, Deputy General Manager for Financial Health & Aviation Insurance and leader of the NCAA delegation, assured the gathering of her team’s commitment to fulfilling the Committee’s objectives. She emphasised the importance of their collaborative efforts in ensuring the success of the aviation sector’s insurance framework.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Jankara underscored the need for flexibility and automation in implementing the Committee’s mandate, expressing confidence in its ability to deliver on its responsibilities. He noted that the calibre of members on the Committee inspires optimism for impactful outcomes.
The inauguration concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Ajuyah Omeresan Alfred, Assistant Director for Special Risk, who reiterated NAICOM’s dedication to fostering an efficient and effective aviation insurance framework. This partnership signals a renewed focus on safeguarding the interests of stakeholders and strengthening the operational efficiency of the aviation industry.
