Monarchs raise concerns over insecurity in Delta

…Threaten to invoke curses on robbers, kidnappers, others

Following the unabated security challenges in Delta state, traditional rulers at the weekend raised concerns over the upsurge in kidnappings, armed robbery, rape, land tussle, cultism and herdsmen attacks, warning that they may be forced to invoke curses on the perpetrators.

The traditional rulers accused the security agencies in the state, particularly the police of insincerity in tackling the insecurity in the state.

The traditional rulers stated this after a two- hour closed door meeting at the Government House, Asaba, which was attended by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ononye Mordi, among others.

The meeting headed by the Chairman, Delta state Council of Traditional Rulers, Obi Emmanuel Efeziomor 11, summoned the state Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwah to explain the recent wave of insecurity occasioned by the increasing rate of kidnapping, banditry and rape among others.

In a communique issued at the end of the closed meeting,signed by Obi Emmanuel Efeziomor 11, the Obi of Owa, and Chairman, the monarchs, urged the security agencies in the state to direct sufficient energy towards arresting the persistent menace of kidnapping and other criminal activities by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the state.

The communique reads in part:: “We have been under siege of hoodlums including suspected Fulani herdsmen who have allegedly turned over 176 communities in the state into battle fields.

“We are getting very worried and might be forced to invoke curses on the perpetrators. For six months, we can no longer sleep with our two eyes closed and we are calling on the Police Commissioner, Hafiz Inuwah, who is in- charge of the state to redouble his efforts with a view to ensuring Deltans’ safety.

“We on our own, will do everything possible to collaborate with the security agencies that will ensure strict compliance for the hoodlums to relocate or face our wrath.

“We are aware of the recent events in Issele Azagba Community and Okpanam Community. We are very much concerned.”

The royal fathers urged the security agencies to intensify efforts in ensuring compliance to the restriction of inter -state travels to prevent the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

The monarchs however, commended the state Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, for his proactive measures in fighting against COVID-19 as well as applauded the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ononye Mordi, for enlightening them on steps taken so far in the fight against the disease.

They enjoined the public to adhere strictly to safety measures such as observing simple personal hygiene, washing of hands regularly with water or alcohol based sanitizers, wearing of face masks and observing social distancing in public places.

The monarchs also called on the state government to ensure that the environment and all pplaces are adequately disinfected to reduce the spread of coronavirus pandemic in the state.

They also paid glowing tributes to the state commissioner of police and other law -enforcement agencies in the state for their efforts in ensuring the compliance of the public to the measures adopted in combating the pandemic
