Mob kills two policemen as tipper crushes mother, two children

Tragedy struck in Onitsha on Thursday as mob lynched two policemen for allegedly causing the death of a woman and his two children at Owerri Road.

Eyewitnesses told newsmen that the tipper lorry driver which was carrying sand was escaping from policemen who allegedly demanded money from the driver.

The tipper driver, who was said to have lost control in the process, crushed a woman and her two children who were waiting to board a vehicle.

The Policemen on seeing the development took to their heels but the mob spontaneously pursued them and lynched two, while others escaped.

The policemen were said to be on special duty, guarding a factory along Owerri Road, which was equally touched by the mob.

Consequently, the Okpoko Police Station immediately went into massive and indiscriminate arrest of persons along Owerri Road.

When The Anambra Times visited the scene of the incident, where about 200 persons were said to have been arrested, it was deserted obviously to avoid arrest by police.

All efforts to reach the Police Command in the state to speak on the matter failed as the GSM numbers of the Police Commissioner, Mr. Garba Baba Umar and the image maker of the command, Nkiru Nwode, were engaged as well that of the DPO Okpoko Division under whose jurisdiction the incident took place, Gabriel Elaigwu, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).
