What You Should Know
On Thursday, Singida Black Stars played Namungo FC in the Tanzanian league and Obasogie made a howler late in the injury time. Deep into stoppage time, Namungo’s free kick gave Black Stars a 1-0 lead. At first glance, the delivery of the freekick appeared to be a simple catch, but Obasogie’s error in catching the freekick gave the opposition an equalizer which was scored by Fabrice Ngoy.
Additionally, Ugandan player Khalid Aucho received a three-month suspension from the team “for indiscipline and absenteeism from work.”
The team then issued a warning to all of its employees and players to maintain accountability, discipline, and respect for the badge.
Obasogie left Ethiopia’s Fasil Kenema to join the Singida Black Stars in 2025.
The Super Eagles camp has consistently featured the shot stopper. He was a member of the Morocco-based 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) bronze-winning team. In the tournament, he was Nigeria’s third-choice goalie, behind Francis Uzoho and Stanley Nwabali.
In recent years, Obasogie has become the second Nigerian goalie to be involved in a match-fixing scandal. Maduka Okoye’s involvement in a betting scandal in 2025 resulted in a two-month suspension from all football activities in Italy and this has raised concerns amongst football lovers.
