Lady gang-raped, family house set ablaze by suspects

Uchenna Okolie, Owerri

The Imo State police command has confirmed the gang-raping of a lady by 10 men in Owerri, the state capital.

This is also as it has declared seven of the suspects wanted.

According to a police bulletin signed by Cpl Marting Madu, the incident occurred on May 4, 2021.

He said in the bulletin that “on 6th May 2021, Ms Okebaram Anthonia Nkemjika, a native of Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, came to the office shivering, scared and traumatized; and reported that on 04/05/2021, while she was coming back from a night vigil from Redeemed Christian Church of God located at No.27 Nwokedi Street, Owerri Imo State.

“She was accosted by about 10 young men who stopped her. That in a blink of an eye they jacked her up and tied her hands, forcefully tore her dress and raped her severally, one after the other which caused her serious injury on her private parts.”

Following the report, the police said a thorough investigation was carried out led by Sgt. Stanley Obi of the Crime Branch.

“Three suspects were arrested, interrogated, found culpable and charged to court. They are: Achi Lazarus, Munachi Ike and Isaac Ray,” he added.

Our correspondent, however, gathered that the matter took a worst turn after the three arrested suspects were charged to court.

“The seven suspects that are at large went to the house of Okebaram Anthonia and set the building on fire and destroyed part of the property. The father of Anthonia and her two siblings were consumed in the inferno.

“Not yet done, the said rapist have not rested on their oars as they are hell-bent on killing the said Anthonia, unless their members are released from the court.

“It is based on the foregoing that Anthonia is advised to stay away since these rapists are cultists with wide network of gangs who always avenge for their group,” the police added.
