Labourer Escapes Death After Allegedly Stealing Chicken In Delta

A 28 years old labourer (names withheld), who claimed he had been facing serious hardship in the past six years, narrowly escaped death by whiskers after he had allegedly stole a chicken in Asaba, Delta State.
The incident which happened on Friday night around Summit area of Asaba, attracted residents of the area to the scene when the suspect’s attempt to escape met a brick wall.
Witnesses said the suspect was taken away by members of the vigilante group in Asaba after he was rescued from the hands of mob that almost burnt him alive.
The vigilante Chairman, Mr. Nnamdi Chukwuedo, who confirmed the arrest of the suspect, said the suspect was rescued from angry mob who were about setting him ablaze for allegedly stealing chicken.
But the suspect upon interrogation by journalists said: “I picked up a stone to kill one of the fowls in the poultry because I no longer get jobs to sustain my family, I promised my wife chicken and I tried if I could get one of the chickens for her in a nearby poultry, unfortunately, luck ran out of me after I dumped the dead fowl in a dustbin when a man who had been monitoring me shouted thief oh! Thief oh! and I was caught”.
The vigilante boss speaking further, said that but for his members’ intervention, the angry mob would have burnt him alive, adding that the suspect had been handed over to the police at the ‘A’ Division Police Station for further investigation.
