Labour Party may go to court over election postponement

By Kingsley Chukwuka, Jos

As the postponement of the 2019 general elections continue to generate reactions across the country and beyond, Governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Plateau, Nura Waziri, said his party might take legal actions after due consultations. Speaking in Jos on Monday, Waziri told journalists that the federal government should in the spirit of fair play reimburse all registered political parties with the sum of N1 billion each to ensure successful elections. “Failure to do so will clearly show that the postponement was made to break the smaller political parties and their candidates”, he said. The guber candidate however noted that the country’s democracy is facing the greatest challenge of all times, adding that the postponement may discourage voters from keeping faith with electoral process thereby given the bigger parties more opportunity to rig election at will. “I believe the postponement is caused by incompetence, negligence or compromise, either way the INEC staff involve must be identified, sacked and persecuted. “Candidates most of whom collected loans with interest has suffered great lost and are now in a dilemma”, Waziri said.
