Kano assembly suspends 5 members over misconduct

The Kano state House of Assembly on Monday suspended five members for alleged misconduct barely a week after the deposition of the Emir of Kano Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Announcing the suspension, the Speaker of the House, Abdulaziz Gafasa, said that the decision taken to suspend the five legislators was predicated on the premise that the unruly behaviour they exhibited on the floor of the House last Monday was what has necessitated the action.

According to him, the decision came on the heels of the stir created by the five suspended members of the House shortly after the submission of the report of the commission of inquiry established to investigate allegation of alleged official misconduct levelled against the deposed emir by a group and an individual

He however, stated that it was as a result of the alleged violation of the House rules on holding proceedings that led to the rowdy session that nearly led to the snatching of the mace and the commotion that followed afterwards, adding that the suspension slammed on the five legislators is expected to last for six month.

The five members suspended are Garba Gwarmai of the Kunchi/Tsanyawa Constituency; Labaran Madari, Warawa Constituency; Muhammed Butu-Butu, Rimin-Gado/ Tofa Constuency; Alhaji Isiyaku Danja, Gezawa Constituency and Salisu Ahamed Gwangwazo of Kano Municipal Constituency respectively.

Out of the five suspended members of the House, two are from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and three from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
