Irhene backs Jos grassroots football development

Nigerian born AEL Limassol of Cyprus defensive midfielder, Fidelis Irhene, said he will organise grassroots football competitions in Plateau State to discover talents in the state.

Irhene told Extra Time in Jos that he would assist the best among the talents to play professional football.

The midfielder who was born in Jos on the January 20, 1996 said the tournaments and eventual assistance was his way of giving back to the society that made him.

A former U20 invitee during Manu Garba’s time in charge of the national team added that all participating teams would be given sports materials to encourage them.

He stated that apart from the competition, he intends to visit orphanages with gifts as part of his corporate social responsibility.

Irhene first signed a 5-year contract for FC Porto 2014 and a year later he was loaned to Portimonense FC.

The midfielder, in the 2nd year of his loan was among the squad that promoted the team to top division (Portuguese Primera Liga) in the season 2016/2017.

Immediately after the season, he signed for AEL Limassol in Cyprus.

He played his first home match last weekend for his current club against St Joseph, and he played the full 90 minutes, as they defeated their opponents 6-0 and was rated one of the best players on parade.

Irhene also scored as his team defeated Niedercorn FC of Luxemburg 2-1 in his side’s UEFA Europa League qualification match played on July 20, 2017 in Cyprus.
