Insurance: Rector identifies unethical practices as bane of growth

The Rector, College of Insurance and Financial Management (CIFMS), Lagos, Mrs Yeside Oyetayo, has identified unethical practices as bane to the growth and development of the industry.

Oyetayo, who spoke to newsmen in Lagos, said that the college would not trade high ethical standards of its students with anything.

She said that the students on their first day in the college were made to know that insurance industry has zero-tolerance for indiscipline, so that they could sit up from onset.

“We told them, no matter the temptations and challenges; they must not compromise the ideals of the profession.

“It is only by doing so that they can remain worthy ambassadors of the insurance industry, “she said.

She said that the college had partnered with various international organisations, such as GIZ, a German trade facilitation agency and Actuaries without Borders, a non-profit volunteer organization within the International Actuarial Association (IAA).

The partnership, she said was to develop, organize and promote the actuarial profession through the college

Oyetayo said that the college is offering full-time and part-time Diploma in Insurance and Certificate Courses in Risk Management, Pensions and Annuity and Islamic Finance and Takaful.

Furthermore, she said the college also conducts induction training for new recruits in the insurance industry.

“We are currently collaborating with some of the universities offering degree courses in insurance on our Diploma Programme to boost enrolment levels in our insurance courses.

“The programme is intense, consisting of 22 technical courses through which we deliver in-depth training for 9 months to our students preparing them for a successful career in insurance.

“It is specifically geared towards assisting insurance and non-insurance graduates desirous of a career in insurance to attain professional qualification within a short time.

“I can boldly say that the objectives the programme have been met because of over 90 per cent success rate of our students in the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) examinations held in April and October last year.

“Besides, over 75 per cent of our unemployed graduates have subsequently secured employment in various insurance companies and to this, we have delivered on our promises, “she said.
