INEC Removes Names Of 190 Foreigners From Voter Register

It’s quite unbelievable that some foreigners resident in Nigeria got their names on the permanent voters register ahead of the 2015 general election

No one is asking – how did these names get in the register in the first place?

Names of 190 non-Nigerians have been removed from the country’s Voter Register.

The names were removed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as part of measures to clean up the register.

This follows reports from the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) that it has retrieved several Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and National Identity cards from foreigners who were alleged to have registered as voters.

In a statement issued by INEC;s Director in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, the commission said it would ensure that the voter register is free of unqualified person while adhering internationally accepted standards.

The commission further said it would continue to strengthen its relationship with security agencies and other organisations in ensuring that the electoral process remains free and fair.
