IGP worried over sale, use of pre-registered SIM cards
…says it threatens national security
Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, Inspector General of Police (IGP), has described the sale and use of pre-registered SIM card as criminal and a potential threat to national security and governance.
He said this at a one-day sensitisation workshop for law enforcement agencies in the northeast zone on telecommunications issues, organised by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) in Gombe.
He said,“These criminal activities, including use of pre-registration subscriber identification module SIM cards should be of concern to all of us.
As a law enforcement officer, it is my belief that in addressing these challenges, we must re-strategise on our noble programme of community policing across communities and give our communities greater stake in securing national assets.”
In a related development, the IGP is billed to join other security chiefs, his imediate predecessor, Solomon Arase and other stakeholders on security at Osogbo, the Osun State capital on July 26 to mull solutions to the menace of kidnapping and terrorism in the country.
The conference, which is being organised by the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, would draw security experts from across the country to tackle the menace of insecurity and terrorism.
At a press conference held recently to usher the national security conference in Osogbo, the chairman of the conference planning committee, Mr. John Okedoye, said the conference became imperative because of the worrisome state of insecurity in the country.
Okedoye said the conference will draw participants from the 36 states of the country including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, while security experts expected to deliver papers at the conference include the IGP Idris, former IGP Arase, Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Senator Babafemi Ojudu and an educationist, Dr. Oyebade Olowogboyega.
