The Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN), has concluded the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Caleb University, Imota, Lagos under the Mutual Cooperation Agreement with Tertiary Institutions (MCATI).
Addressing staff, management and students of the University, ICAN President, Mr Mohammadu Zakari said MCATI aimed at dissemination of learning and deepening accounting education in Nigeria adding that the importance of accounting education cannot be overemphasised.
He also stated that ICAN, which has a humble beginning of 215 members, now boasts of 42,283 chartered accountants and 22,592 Associate accounting technicians who are very talented and ethically committed professionals working in every sphere of the country.
“ICAN members hold very important positions in Nigeria. The MoU we are signing today is essentially a collaboration between Caleb University and ICAN whereby ICAN syllabus will be integrated with the University National Universities Commission approved syllabus for the University”, he said.
The ICAN helmsman said the MoU will also improve dissemination of accounting knowledge to students in order to improve their accounting experience.
He added that it contains 16 subjects broken down into three levels namely: Foundation, Skilled and Professional levels.
” The syllabus covers a wide range of knowledge which an accountant us likely to encounter in the accounting world and it has a global accounting qualification “.
Zakari also ensured the students that they will study using the Integrated ICAN NUC Approved Curriculum thus granted 11 subjects exemption which is the highest compared to the seven subjects exemption for universities that accredited by ICAN but not integrated into the NUC curriculum.
” After today’s MoU the students will be granted exemption from the foundation and skill levels and then qualified as Chartered accountants “, he said.
He also said the signing of MoU has placed Caleb University as one of the best universities for training future accountants for Nigeria.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Daniel Ayandiji said Caleb University has embarked on deliberate path in building strong academic team by employing best brains in the industry , such as immediate past President of Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria , Prof Teju Somorin and former President of the Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Prof Joseph Ajibola.
He added that this is to build holistic students who will be good academically and industrially and be prepared for the world of work.
