Herdsmen: Onaiyekan urges Buhari to stop carnage
The Metropolitan Archbishop of Abuja and staunch promoter of inter faith activities, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to deploy every security and intelligence apparatus at his disposal to stop the incessant herdsmen attack on fellow Nigerians.
Cardinal Onaiyekan, who made the call in Abuja last weekend while inaugurating ’Mirian Soup Kitchen’, a humanitarian service centre, located at Gwagwalada in the Federal Capital Territory, said the President must live up to his public rating and remain decisive in tackling all security challenges currently facing the country.
The Archbishop further commended the founder of the centre, Reverend Father Willy Ojukwu, for championing the cause of humanity, while urging government at all levels to partner with religious organisations and humanitarian centres in the efficient delivery of much needed services to the people.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who was represented by the Executive Secretary of National Mosque management, Alhaji Ibrahim Jega, called on Nigerians and well-meaning organisations and corporate bodies to support the Kitchen as part of their contributions to humanity. He also called on the youths to shun criminal vices and embrace the centre.
The Abuja based Catholic priest and founder ’’Marian Soup kitchen Centre, Gwagwalada’’, Reverend Father Willy Ojukwu, while commending the successes so far recorded in the war against corruption, however, warned that Nigerians needed more patriotic, convincing action from government.
He maintained that the primary focus in establishing the soup kitchen is to promote inter –religious harmony where people of all faiths in the country sit side by side and eat together and inspired with moral messages. He also dispelled any fear on the sustainability of the project, adding that he depended on divine providence and the generosity of the people.
He assured that after consolidating the project in Abuja, there were plans to extend the programme to other states and also to build an empowerment center.
