The highly anticipated AY live show which took place on Easter Sunday, at the Eko Hotel and Suites, was to say the least, a memorable one. Well what do you expect when the annual show, in its seventh year has been adjudged by many, year in year out , as the most successful entertainment show in Nigeria. The show which ended in the early hours of Easter Monday, was expectedly, laced with heavy doses of rib cracking jokes, drama and music.
Snippets from the event
President Goodluck Jonathan gets standing ovation
Convener of the show, comedian, movie producer and actor, Ayo Makun, otherwise known as AY, as usual, was in his elements, but not before acknowledging the role of President Goodluck Jonathan for making it possible for the annual show to hold peacefully, contrary to what many had thought the outcome of the Presidential elections would have been, chaotic. He urged everyone present to clap for the President’s for not to allow his ambitions take precedence over the peace and security of the country.
On Amaju Pinnick’s affiliation with the entertainment industry
The former Delta State Sports Commissioner and the current president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is a well known supporter of the Nigerian entertainment industry, specifically the comedians. The 54 year old who is the sole convener of entertainment shows in Delta State was at the AY live event, in his capacity as one of AY’s adopted ‘uncles’. As usual, he was there with his lovely wife, Julie Wokocha.
Yomi Badejo Okusanya lets down his hair
After being away from the social sphere for a while, Yomi who runs CMC Connect Ltd, a public relations company, seem to be slowly inching towards re integrating into the social scene he left unceremoniously. Dressed in a Danshiki attire, the Secretary General of Association of Public Relations Agencies and former Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, did leave behind every inhibitions and had a good time, alone, without his better half, Oyinkansola, a General Counsel with the Lagos State Government.
Betty and Sunny Irabor
Who knew that Betty Irabor, the publisher of Genevieve magazine, a lifestyle magazine, was open to having fun at a comedy/music shows. The graceful journalist made it to the show with her husband, Sunny. The media power couple were one of those who made it early to the show.
Makanjuola Alabi set to dominate the social scene
He used to be the Managing Director of Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA), until he was relieved of his duties by Governor Babatunde Fashola over alleged financial misappropriation and abuse of office. Married to Biola Alabi, the former boss of M-Net, Mako, as he is fondly called, wasn’t your typical socialite and only attended events with his wife when she was at the helms of affairs at M-Net. Well, since her exit from M-Net, it seems the floodgate of social invitations have become opened for him as he has been sighted in recent times, at several social gatherings. Mako who now runs Vimedia Outdoor Limited, was at the show but without his better half.
Between Okwudili Umenyiora and Emeka Okonkwo
Not only is Okwudili known as the CEO Of Dilly Motors, no one will forget in a hurry, especially residents of Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, the sight of a certain athletic built man who jogs on the grounds of the estate, in the afternoon, with armed security escorts trailing behind him in a Toyota Tundra truck. In addition to owning a flamboyantly coloured mansion in the estate, which he regularly shows off in music videos, Dilly as he is fondly called, is also the chairman of Dilly records and has Presh, the one half of defunct KC Presh, signed on to his record label.
Emeka Okonkwo on the other hand is the younger brother of singer, Limpopo crooner, Kcee and is the one behind all of Kcee’s successes. Fondly called E-Money for being extremely rich, aside from having investments in oil and gas, shipping and real estate, he is also the President of 5 -star music records which has artists like Harrysong signed on and his brother who also doubles as the Vice President of the record label. The duo of Dilly and E-Money used to be best of friends; they attended events together and would always sit together. Unfortunately, their friendship couldn’t stand the test of time as they both fell out for undisclosed reasons. Incidentally, one of the fall outs of the rift between them was the record label, Dilly set up, to expectedly, rival his erstwhile friend’s 5 Star music record label. At the show, they both came separately; E-Money first and later, Dilly. No pleasantries were exchanged as they both sat at different tables with their entourage.
The re enactment of INEC’s Presidential collation figures
Trust AY to always infuse drama skits into his shows. This year’s show wasn’t any different as he re enacted INEC’s Presidential collation figures and the drama that played out as each State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner called out their state’s figures. While AY played INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, comedians, Emeka Smith played the Rivers State’s REC, Seyi Law, the Kano State’s REC, MC Shakara, Godsday Orubebe, the PDP agent who disrupted proceedings and Ushbebe played an interpreter. That the drama skit was hilarious would be stating the obvious
The fashion show
To help spice things up, fashion designer, Patricia Onumunu of Trish O’Couture showcased pieces from her most recent collection.
The Elegant Stallion, Onyeka Onwenu without her King, Sunny Ade
The singer, songwriter, actress, journalist and politician Onyeka Onwenu was one of the performers at the show. Her performance was adjudged one of the best as she belted out tunes from her repertoire of songs. Many had looked forward to her performance of the classic ‘One Love’, a duet she did with King Sunny Ade who was also billed to perform. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be as the King of Juju music, was unavoidably absent. The elegant stallion who is a former chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture is the current Executive Director/chief executive officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Comedienne, Princess, becomes butt of comedians’ jokes
Her lack luster performance is a story for another day. What however gave her undue attention was when comedians, Gordons and I Go Dye turned her to a butt of their own jokes. Who can blame them when she did likewise to her ‘senior’ colleagues. Not only did Gordons refer to her extra large bust line as the probable cause for her marriage failure, less than a month after she got married, I Go Dye weighed in on her, rebuking her for turning her marriage failure into a joke. He advised her to move on and find solace in other things that make her happy.
Awilo Longomba was the surprise act
Perhaps unable to get King Sunny Ade, Wizkid, Timaya, Yemi Alade and several others, who were billed to perform at his show, AY quickly got across to Awilo Longomba, the Congolese musician who started out a s drummer before pitching his tent with singing, to perform at the event. The aging performer who came with two of his energetic dancers failed to impress as he sounded like he was either drunk or high on weed. His dancers made up for his lack luster performance with their erotic and energetic dance steps.
……..And it rained Naira and Pounds
First it was while Onyeka Onwenu was performing and it ended with her performance. It continued when Lil Kesh came out to perform his hit single, Shoki. The diminutive singer jumped down from the stage into the VVIP crowd with the hope that he will be blessed with some notes and he got more than he bargained for. He was drenched in both Naira and Pounds Sterling currencies. After stuffing his two pockets and a polythene bag with money, the ‘little man’ jumped back on stage and walked off with his loot without ending his performance. The currency ‘rain maker’ was none other than Richard Nyong, the young man behind Lekki Gardens.
The array of performers
MC Galaxy, Sexy Steel, MC Shakara, Laff up, Still Ringing, Akpororo, Funny Bone, Gordons, Acapella, Ushbebe, Aje Butter, Pencil, Karate kid, Explicit
