Group task Kano govt to step up fight against malnutrition

Journalists under the aegis of Journalists for Nutrition, (J4N) have tasked Kano state Government to redouble efforts at combating malnutrition and stunting in the state.
The group, in a statement issued in Kano, on Wednesday said it is imperative for the state Government to mobilize traditional rulers, in waging the war against the disturbing situation.
The statement signed by Abdulgafar Oladimeji, and Bilikisu Zango, chairman and secretary respective, stated that, available statistics indicate that, Kano state harbours the highest number of stunt persons in Nigeria.
According to J4N, the state Government should ensure the judicious spending of $750,000 worth dietary diversification intervention fund from UNICEF, made available to the state.
The group advise the state Government to hurriedly embark on the search for other diverse methods of interventions from private organizations, philanthropists health donor agencies and Civil Society organizations.
“We call on the state Government to immediately begin to organize town hall meetings at all levels, where the crucial issue of malnutrition and dietary diversification would be deliberated and the populace would be sensitized on the issue.”
This is coming on the heel of a recent investigation which shows that the lives of about half a million children are threatened by health cases that are incited by malnutrition in the state.
