Govt to re-equip French teaches, says Ebie

Delta State is to re-equip French Language teachers in its post primary schools across that state for better performance, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in the state, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, has said. Ebie disclosed this Friday during the opening ceremony of a training workshop organised for 100 French Language teachers in Delta State Pilot Schools held at Saint Patrick’s College, Asaba.
The Commissioner who was represented by the Chairman, Post Primary Education Board (PPEB), Sir Patrick Akporuno, said that the justification for the training programme stemmed from the fact that French Language has become Nigeria’s second official language.
According to him, it is expected that French Language would be used in all aspects of our lives and not just as a class subject, adding that the training was indeed an opportunity for the privileged participants in the sense that it (the training exercise) would prepare them well for the task.
He added that teachers’ development was one of the priorities of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa administration, pointing out that the state had always encouraged the teaching and learning of French Language “and that is why this training is approved, despite the economic recession in the country”.
This Ebie said, goes a long way to show the premium that the state government placed on this subject (French Language), adding that 64 pilot schools have been created. “To crown it all, over 280 French Language teachers have been posted and concentrated in the pilot schools.
It is expected that it this project is well monitored an sat the end of six years, these schools would produce enough candidates for the tertiary institutions”. the commissioner stated.
While applauding the chairman and members of PPEB for agreeing to key into the policy of French Language teaching in Nigeria, he said “we are aware that some people may know or speak the language, but may not be able to impart on their learner”, adding that “it is for this reason and others that we decided to package this training in order to upgrade you”.
