Goods worth Millions of Naira have been destroyed after a midnight fire gutted part of a popular GSM market in Maiduguri,
According to multiple sources, the fire incident occurred on Friday night and continued to blaze till Saturday morning, burning about 14 shops and 40 adjoining stalls.
Traders who had shops and stalls in the area hit by the raze said their shops were fully stocked with laptops, phones and other accessories.
One of the victims, a shop owner, Malam Babagana Kashim, told journalists on Saturday at the market premises that they were told by the soldiers, stationed nearby, that the fire started late on Friday and continued till the early hours of Saturday morning.
He said the soldiers noticed the flame from within the market and immediately alerted the fire brigade officials.
According to him, the soldiers contacted organisations within the town with fire fighting equipment and effort made to arrest the fire minimised the number of shops and stalls that were destroyed.
