FG trains, empowers 65 rural women on fishing technologies

The Federal Government under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has trained and empowered no fewer than 65 women on fishing technologies.

, the Acting Director of Information in the ministry, Mrs. Lere Adams, who made this known in a statement in Abuja, on Monday, said that the training was in line with the Federal Government’s drive to diversify the economy of the country through agriculture.

Adams said that the women trained were drawn from Gombe, Adamawa, Kogi, Katsina, Niger, Kano States.

According to her, the training which took place at the Federal College of Fresh Water Fisheries Technology, New Bussa, Niger State, is to improve the livelihood and standard of living of women across the states.

“This training and empowerment programme is in fulfillment of the campaign promises of the Federal Government,’’ she said.

Adams noted that fish tank, 400 fingerlings, weighing scale, five bags of fish feed each and medicines were distributed to the participants to enable them start up the business.

She added that N31, 500 was given to each participant at the end of the training to also support them in the venture.

Adams quoted Mrs. Karima Babangida, the Director, Gender and Youth of the department, as saying that women were considered for the training because most of them were backbones of their families.
