Excitement as Benue takes over 27-yr-old abandoned FG water works

There was excitement on Tuesday as Benue state Governor, Samuel Ortom, announced the state government’s decision to take over the rehabilitation of Ameladu Water Works in Gboko Local Government Area of the state.
The governor, who made the announcement, while inspecting the facility abandoned about 27 years ago, said on rehabilitation, it will provide water to Ameladu, Gboko Town and its environs.

The governor pledged to liaias with the federal government through the National Assembly and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to revamp the Ameladu Water Works which he noted has been vandalised by criminals.
He also inspected ongoing construction of roads in Gboko including Isaac Shaahu Road and the Tor Tiv’s palace among others.

“The Ameladu water works project was initiated and executed in 1993 by the then Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida administration and handed over to the state government, but was later vandalized in 2008,” Ortom revealed.
He said he will provide adequate security to guard the remaining equipment at the facility from further theft and vandalisation.
Ortom said the water works is capable of providing over 9, 000 cubic meters of water daily.
He said the state government will also contribute its quota to ensuring that the project works optimally to provide the water needs of the people.
Speaking on the Greater Makurdi Water Works, Ortom said the ongoing work there is 90 per cent completed, saying what is remaining is the reticulation works to enable the plant supply water to Makurdi residents.
