Enugu Massacre: Fear grips Igbo-Ukwu community as Fulani refugees arrive Anambra

Following the presence of over 100 Fulani refugees in Igbo-Ukwu community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State last Monday, fear has gripped the people of the area.
According to a source, although it’s not known whether there were herdsmen among the fleeing Fulani, the refugees were seen trooping into the community for safety purposes, having fled Enugu State for fear of being attacked by angry youths, but their presence kept the villagers uncomfortable.
The source said the Fulani refugees who relocated with all their families, as well as their personal belongings, on arrival to Igbo-Ukwu moved straight to Hausa-Fulani community in Igbo-Ukwu where they were received by their members.
The traditional ruler of Igbo-Ukwu community, His Royal Highness, Igwe Barrister Martin Ezeh, Idu II, who confirmed this development, said he had personally visited the refugees and told them not to panic, so long as they did not cause trouble, assuring them of their safety in the community.
He said he advised his subjects to accommodate the refugees in the spirit of one Nigeria.
Igwe Ezeh said it is not the custom in Igbo land to chase out someone who runs to you for safety, although he noted that it would only be a different thing if the stranger later constitutes a security risk to the host community, “and that will not be tolerated.”
The monarch further stated that he believed in unity in diversity and called on all the ethnic nationalities in Nigeria to see themselves as one which he believed would be the only panacea to bring lasting peace in the country. He identified tribal sentiment as the bane of peace and national integration that must be eschewed.
“Talking about Book Haram, Indigenous People of Biafra, Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB or any other self-actualisation group is rubbish. That will not help us. Let us avoid tribal sentiments and live as one Nigeria”, the Igwe said.
