Eguavon inaugurates ex-Nigeria International Footballers Social Club in Edo

Former Super Eagles Coach, Austin Eguavon, on Tuesday, inaugurated the Ex- Nigeria International Footballers Social Club in Edo to take care of the interest of retired players.

Eguavon told sports writers during the inauguration in Benin that the gesture was to assist ex-Nigeria international footballers whenever in need.

He said: “We came up with this idea after the burial of Stephen Keshi. It is a purely an interest group.

“We discovered that former international footballers suffer a lot after serving the country with no recognition. It is a platform where we can celebrate, exploit and help to develop Nigeria’s football.

“We have a minimum of 500 ex-football players in Nigeria. Each former player is expected to contribute N1000 as monthly contribution to run the club.”

According to him, the club will go into sports development once it is financially stable.

Eguavoen added that the club would be inaugurated in all states of the federation.

Ahmed Aigbona, Chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Edo chapter, who commended the gesture, said it was a well thought out retirement plan for ex-players.

Aigbona, however, urged the club to partner with SWAN.

The inauguration was attended by former footballers and coaches of Super Eagles.
