Edo Police detain man for murder, parade 87 suspects

The Edo State Police Command has arrested one Cephas Abas (20 years) who hails from Benue State for allegedly killing a motorcyclist and absconded with the bike at Okomu in Ovia South West Local Council Area of the state.
The Edo State Police Commissioner, Haliru Gwandu,disclosed this to newsmen in Benin City while parading over 87 suspects involved in various offences ranging from armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and illegal possession of arms and ammunition.
He said , the 20 years old Abas was reported to have ambushed a bike rider and beheaded him with a cutlass and made way with his motor bike, and was heading towards selling the bike to his cohorts when he was apprehended.
The suspect who confessed to the crime said the incident occurred on November 3 in the Okomu community and gave the name of the victim as, Aniete Okon, a neighbour of his.
Abas said he committed the crime due to poverty adding that he only wanted to disposes the rider of the bike without any intention to kill him, stressing that he needed to sell the bike at N160,000 to raise some money for his livelihood.
The Edo State police boss said all those paraded would be charged to court soon, adding that the police had beefed up security across the state ahead of the festive period, warning all criminal elements in the state to turn a new leaf as the police was battle ready to combat crime to the barest minimum in the state.
