Driver docked over alleged reckless driving

A 37-year-old driver, Popoola Olajide, on Friday, appeared before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun, for alleged reckless driving.

Olajide, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of reckless driving, unlawful damage and driving without a licence.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 6, at 09:15 a.m. at Ajebamidelle area of Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi said that the defendant drove one Toyota Hiace bus, with Registration No. AUC 216 XE recklessly on the highway, without regards traffic law.

He added that the defendant drove dangerously and damaged one Hyundai bus, with Registration No. KJA 232 FV, belonging to Sought Out College, Ile-Ife.

“He also drove his vehicle without a driving licence,” the prosecutor said.

The offences, according to him, contravene Sections 6(10), 10(3) and 18 of the Road Traffic Law of Osun, 2002.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Olayemi Ijalana, urged the court to grant his client bail in most the liberal term, promising that he would not jump bail and that he would provide substantial sureties.

The Magistrate, Mrs Bose Idowu, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum.

Idowu said that the sureties must swear to affidavit of means and that they must provide three years tax clearance certificates.

She, thereafter, adjourned the case till Feb 28, for hearing
