NIS Alarms Public Over Surge in Fake Recruitment Websites

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a stern warning to the general public regarding the proliferation of fraudulent websites claiming to conduct recruitment exercises on its behalf.

In a statement released on Tuesday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the service disowned the circulating portals, clarifying that they are the handiwork of fraudsters aiming to exploit unsuspecting job seekers.

The NIS emphasized that it is not currently running an independent recruitment drive. Instead, it directed all prospective applicants to rely solely on the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), which is the only body legally empowered to manage recruitment for the paramilitary agency.

“The service urged all applicants and members of the public to rely solely on the official CDCFIB recruitment portal for accurate and up-to-date information.

“Any other websites, links, or advertisements circulating outside this official platform are unauthorised and should be disregarded,” the statement read.

The immigration service highlighted the dangers posed by these fake sites, noting that they are often designed to harvest sensitive personal data or extort money from desperate applicants under false pretenses.

“Applicants are advised to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to fraudsters who may use fake portals to collect personal data or demand payments under the guise of recruitment,” the NIS added.

The warning from the NIS comes amidst a wave of similar scams targeting government agencies. In recent days, other bodies such as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have also had to issue disclaimers to debunk viral fake recruitment notices.

The NIS has urged members of the public to report any suspicious websites or recruitment advertisements to relevant authorities for immediate action.
