Dons challenged to proffer solutions to nation`s recession

As the Federal Government and stake holders seek possible solutions to the Nation’s recession, academic dons have been challenged to come up with concrete policies that would revive our comatose economy. 

Former Group Executive Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Dr Chris Ogiemwonyi, who was a guest lecturer at the University of Benin gave the challenge at the 42nd Founders Day Lecture titled ” Hard Times For These Times: The Think Factory Guide To Action” 

He suggested that government must “start building bridges between academia and the relevant sectors of our economy. Building synergy among our high institutions and the government and non-government sectors is vital to our economic development”  

He opined that a holistic approach in tackling the fall in crude oil price also  to bear the need for government to quickly summon the courage to do the needful act by passing the petroleum Industry Bill (PIB). 

“Government over dependence on foreign consultants should be reduced. To begin with, we should encourage Nigeria consultants to have joint venture relationship with foreign consulting firms. The period for JV relationships should be defined. It should not exceed 3-5 years” 

He, however expressed confidence that the country will eventually pull out of the current recession as long as the appropriate strategies are put in place to reposition the economy. 

“Our Nation like most nations in the world has experienced, or is also experiencing recession. This is not the first time we are faced with this kind of monumental challenges. 
 
“We need to apply wisdom and come together as a nation to focus and develop appropriate strategies to reposition the economy on sustainable path of economic recovery and growth” 

Vice Chancellor, Professor Faraday Orumwense saidto the University that in its  bid to be among the best in the nation, is to commit service delivery using ICT.

He disclosed that a total of 12, 415 graduate will bag various degrees at the 42nd convocation.
