DISCOS not ready for business – Edo Dep Gov

Governor of Edo State, Mr Philip Shaibu has urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to look into the activities of the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs), saying they are not ready for business.

He also lamented that the state is yet to get its share of transformers it purchased on behalf of the PHCN regretting that despite the fact that the power sector has been privatised, local, state and federal governments are still buying transformers without any refunds from the company.

He spoke when members of the House Committee on Power, led by its chairman, Daniel Asuquo, paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Benin City.

The Deputy governor who noted that unless the country solves the problem in the power sector, it will be difficult for the nation to experience economic growth, said it was as a result of the import of the sector that forced him to move the first motion in the 8th Assembly, calling on government to fix the problem bedevilling the sector.

The chairman House Committee on power, Mr Asuquo disclosed that they were in the state to meet with stakeholders in the sector so as to find lasting solution to the problems in the sector, asserting that “I can assure you that this 8th Assembly must find solution to this problem before the end of our tenure”.
