How customs intercept FUNNAB bus with 211 parcels of Indian hemp

Men of the Nigerian Customs Service, Ogun State Command have intercepted a bus belonging to the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNNAB) loaded with Parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

It was gathered that when the driver of the vehicle whose name was given as Abolade Bolaji had smuggled the items through Imeko a border town in the state was stopped by men of the NCS, he alleged he had only bags of rice which he was conveying down to FUNNAB.

Not satisfied with his explanation, the NCS officials had insisted on conducting a thorough search on the vehicle where they found the parcels buried under the bags of rice. Upon opening it, it was found to be cannabis. at

The Comptroller of the Service, Ogun State Command, Sani Madugu, who disclosed the seizure to journalists in Abeokuta said there were 211 parcels of cannabis which was made to fit Bible size.

At the press briefing where the seized substances were handed over to National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in the state, Mr. Madugu said, “the patrol team of Customs intercepted the vehicle and apprehended the driver of the coaster bus with registration number FUNNAB 50 B-100 FG, alongside 211 parcels of cannabis.

” The suspect was caught while conveying the illegal drugs into the country. He had concealed the parceled cannabis under bags of rice he was transporting, But after a search by the Customs officials, the Indian hemp, neatly wrapped, were discovered.”

While receiving the suspect and exhibits, the NDLEA boss for the state Bala Fagge, commended the Customs for a job well done.

He stated that the cannabis was now being cultivated in neighbouring countries adding that the haul seized from the suspect weighed 295.4kg.

Meanwhile, the University in a statement issued on the incident has said it would not in any way interfere with the ongoing investigation into the matter.

The statement reads, “As a responsible and law-abiding organisation, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta is committed to upholding all statutory enactments guiding its establishment, subsisting legislation in Ogun State and the nation in general. This uncompromising and non-negotiable stance had always and severally been hammered to bonafide members of staff and students of the University,”

The institution has also assured that It would carry out an independent investigation into the matter.

“Already, the University has put the necessary machinery in place, to carry out proper investigations, to ascertain what actually transpired on the said date on one hand, while law enforcement agents, on the other hand, would be allowed and supported to perform their statutory duties in the overall interest of all citizens.”
