Coronavirus: Trevor Noah’s opinion on partying spring breakers

During the coronavirus pandemic, it might be better to simply note that these college students have seen their misinformed quotes about the disease greatly amplified via social media.

“If I get corona, I get corona,” one of the young men in a now-infamous video said, “At the end of the day, I’m not going to let it stop me from partying. I’ve been waiting, we’ve been waiting for Miami spring break for a while. About two months we’ve had this trip planned, two, three months, and we’re just out here to have a good time.

Trevor Noah didn’t mince words while providing a rebuttal that spoke for everyone: “I’m sorry, what? You’re not gonna let coronavirus stop you?” Noah said while sitting on his couch. “Coronavirus is the Harvey Weinstein of diseases: it does not ask for consent, my friend! [This] kid’s making it sound like coronavirus is going to ask for permission before jumping into your body.”

During the early stages of the pandemic, it had been suggested that coronavirus didn’t impair young people as seriously as older citizens. But according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control this week, roughly 40 percent of patients hospitalized so far have been between the ages of 20 and 54.

Still, those statistics haven’t stopped some millennials and members of Generation Z from ignoring the strict social distancing guidelines that have been enacted around the country. Even President Donald Trump has, in his own way, urged the youth of America to stay home.

“We don’t want them gathering, and I see they do gather, including on beaches, including in restaurants—young people,” Trump said this week. “They’re feeling invincible … but they don’t realize that they can be carrying lots of bad things home to grandmother and grandfather and even their parents. So we want them to heed the advice. We mean the advice. And I think it’s getting through.”

According to Noah he said,“Here’s the thing young people need to understand. Yes, coronavirus is most dangerous for old people—but that doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous for young people too, okay? It can still get one into intensive care,” he said, before offering up a sports anecdote that will at least resonate with New Yorkers. “Think of it this way: I always make jokes about the New York Knicks being a bad NBA basketball team, right? But they’re bad relative to other NBA teams. But if you and your amateur-ass office team played against them, you’d be walking off the court like, I’m sorry, Mr. Knicks, I won’t make fun of you again! So get your shit together, young people. Coronavirus is no joke!”
