Collapsed Kano Bridge Claims Another Victim
A tricycle driver died yesterday when yet another portion of a Kano pedestrian bridge which collapsed on Sunday gave way again yesterday.
Five passengers in a taxi had died on Sunday when the bridge, which is under construction on Sheik Jafar Road, collapsed.
Yesterday, the remaining part of the bridge collapsed crashing on a tricycle driver, Sani Ismail.
Efforts to speak to any staff of the construction company proved abortive as none of them was willing to speak.
An officer with the Kano State Road Traffic Agency (karota) who pleaded anonymity faulted the construction work. He noted that the company built only three pillars for such a long bridge.
Secretary to the Kano State Taxi Drivers Association, Mustapha Ibrahim, who spoke to Daily Times at the Kabuga head office, said the driver of the ill-fated taxi cab was their member, 52-year-old Abdulkarim Saleh, with serial number KN 113. He was in the car with two female passengers not six as reported, he said.
He added that the driver and one of the passengers, a young girl on her way home from hospital, had been buried Yesterday.
