Cadence: Motifs by Eric’s new collection shapes brand’s identity

Motifs by Eric launched the Cadence Collection three weeks ago, on October 24, 2015, under the design direction Eric – a garment constructor and competent pattern-maker. This menswear collection comprises a variety of two-piece outfits marked by distinct fabrics and styles.

Eric’s new collection expresses his command of fashion design. Every skill, from draping and pattern-making to garment construction and illustration, was leveraged to create outfits that embody appeal and technical skills.

The different blend of patterns and designs in the collection ensures that each man finds his style among the stock.

The bold stripe patterns on the long-sleeve, crew-neck tops are well matched and the precise seam allowances ensure that the stripes align perfectly, hinting at his expertise in pattern making. The embroidered two-piece, crafted from German wool in shades of grey, black, and pine, displayed exquisite handiwork.

This detail highlights the careful draping and pattern work necessary to maintain balance across the garment. The embroidery, with its intricate lines and cultural resonance, elevates the pieces, but the tops’ traditional sleeve cuts add little to the overall design. The use of concealed snaps on this piece also gives it an air of modernity. The cotton-made, short-sleeve, striped tops with elastic-banded pants emphasize functionality without sacrificing its unique style.

Here, an optimal fit for a range of body types is given premium consideration and this proves Eric’s understanding of measurement points. This piece added an air of casual sophistication to the lineup.

The seam allowances are generous and the choice of lockstitch and overlock stitching ensured shape edges and neat interiors. However, Eric relied heavily on tried-and-true techniques, leaving the construction devoid of experimentation. Hidden seams, pleating, or other exploratory construction methods could have lent these pieces more distinction.

The embroidery designs are clean and precise, and all closures are securely fastened. There is also quite an appreciable measure of exploration in terms of the closures, from buttons to snaps to zips, ensuring that the outfits do not feel static.

The use of premium German wool for both plain and embroidered ensembles ensures a luxurious, structured drape and an understated sheen ideal for semi-formal and formal menswear, while the cotton pieces, though lighter, retain structural integrity thanks to reinforced stitching.

Eric’s craftsmanship in this collection, Cadence, is evident, but the designs feel tethered to convention. Beyond rethinking closures and fabric blends, asymmetry, layering, or unexpected proportions could be employed to create more dynamic pieces.

The collection is poised to resonate strongly with professionals and style-conscious individuals seeking a blend of tradition and modern style. Its versatility makes it suitable for semi-formal settings, casual outings, and even cultural events. The inclusion of practical features like pockets and elastic bands enhances everyday wear ensuring adequate market performance.

However, its reception might be divided among audiences preferring avant-garde styles, as the collection leans more towards refined simplicity.
