Bus conductors face alleged assault, N5, 000 theft charges

Two bus conductors- Sadiq Jamiu and Stephen Alabi, who allegedly attacked a passenger with a sharp object and stole his N5, 000, were on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The accused, Jamiu, 21 and Alabi, 22, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and stealing.

The prosecutor, Michael Unah told the court that the accused committed the offences with some other persons still at large on May 29 at 6.00p.m. at Saudi Park Area, Ilupeju, Lagos.

Unah said that the accused assaulted the complainant, Mr Ayomide Ayodele, by using a sharp object to inflict injuries on his face and head over disagreement on fare.

“The complainant carried his colleague on his laps, while the accused started hurling abusive words on him and wanted him to pay for his colleague.

“They started exchanging words and in the process they dragged the complainant from the bus, hit him with sharp object and stole his money,” he said.

Unah said that the offences contravened Sections 173, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Section 287 prescribes a seven-year imprisonment for stealing, while Section 173 stipulates a three-year jail term for assault.

The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, granted the accused bail of N50, 000 each with two sureties in like sum.

Fashola said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of three years tax payment to Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until July 2 for mention.
