BREAKING: Senate confirms Ilaro poly upgrade to varsity

On Tuesday, the Senate approved the Federal Polytechnic in Ilaro, Ogun State, being upgraded to a university of technology.

The development came after the third reading of a measure to establish the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro, and to Provide for Other Matters Connected Therewith.

Senator Solomon Adeola of the All Progressives Congress, who represents the Lagos West Senatorial District, sponsored the bill.

Adeola had previously sponsored the bill in the 8th Senate, but it was unable to pass before the 8th Senate’s expiration, thus it was reintroduced in the 9th Senate for review and passage.

Senator Sadiq Umar Sulaiman, Vice-Head of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, submitted the report on behalf of the committee’s chairman, Senator Ahmad Babba-Kaita.

According to the report, there is a need to increase chances for advanced technological education.

He went on to say that converting the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, to a university of technology would be a huge boon to the host towns, as it would create jobs as well as educational growth, allowing teeming Nigerian youngsters to easily have access to degree awards in technological subjects.
