Breaking: Nigeria confirms five new Coronavirus cases

The Minister of Health has announced five new cases of Coronavirus bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria to eight.

The new cases had a travel history to the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire confirmed the cases during a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Ehanire said: “We are still collating information on the travelers; two of the 3 from the US are Nigerian, a mother and 6 week old baby the youngest COVID-19 patient we have, and the 3rd is an American national, who crossed the land border and becomes the first COVID-19 case not arriving by air.

“He said the two cases from the UK are Nigerians.”A detailed travel history of each person is being compiled and contacts currently being traced, to identify persons who have recently been in  contact with anyone.

The Federal Government through  the  Federal Ministry of Health is conducting risk assessment to help  guide decision making. He urged citizens not to panic, but allow experts in public health to guide response in a calculated, scientific manner. 

. “Government will do the needful to protect  citizens’ health.”

He said that the victims came from the United States of America and the UK, via the nation’s land border.

The government had placed restriction on travellers from 13 major countries affected by the coronavirus, according to Mr Boss Mustapha, Secretary to Government of the Federation.

Mustapha announced the placement of the restriction at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

The 13 countries include China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Japan, France, Germany, Norway, the U.S., the UK, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

The SGF said that the restrictions would come into effect on Saturday, March 21, and would last four weeks. He added that the restrictions would be subject to a review.

According to Mustapha, these are all countries with more than 1,000 cases of the coronavirus, code-named COVID-19 by the World Health Organisation, domestically.

“You will also recall that the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 at the end of a meeting announced the ban on all forms of travels by public officers and civil servants until further notice.

“This morning, we have found it necessary to brief Nigerians on further measures being taken after an assessment of the global situation.

“All persons arriving in Nigeria who might have visited these countries 15 days prior to such arrival, will be subjected to supervised self-isolation and testing for 14 days,” he said.
