ANSG renovates 3 general hospitals

Anambra State Government has said that three general hospitals in the three senatorial zones in the state are to undergo some renovation work in order to upgrade their status.
These hospitals include the Enugwu-ukwu General Hospital for Central Senatorial district, Ekwulobia General Hospital for the South Senatorial district and Onitsha General Hospital for the North Senatorial district.

Governor Willie Obiano disclosed this recently when he visited one of the Onitsha General hospital to access level of work don.

Gov. Obiano, represented by his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke, at the occasion, restated that the present administration’s commitment towards bettering the lives of Ndi Anambra, is geared towards the health sector and once there is good health, there is a great change and Obiano’s government is working towards that change.

Noting the Governor’s eagerness to give the Onitsha General Hospital a facelift, he expressed optimism that the hospital will soon experience progressive change from what it used to be, to a more befitting hospital for a state like Anambra, which is known for its excellence.

While revealing the work to be resource demanding, Dr. Okeke explained that the renovation may be done in phases to enable continuous and steady progress of work, as a lot still needs to be done, from provision of adequate health facilities to the equipping of the buildings.

Speaking, Chief Medical Director of Onitsha General Hospital, Dr. Eberechukwu Anugwu, pointed out some of the challenges witnessed in the hospital, adding that some of the buildings need to be expanded in order to accommodate the increasing population of people visiting the hospital.

She disclosed that the renovation bill covers only the structural aspect and not the supply of equipment which the hospital is also lacking.

In his own contribution, the contractor in-charge, Professor Obiefuna stated that the hospital prior to the present administration had been in an almost abandoned stage, stressing that it will require significant amount of efforts and resources to bring it to an extremely functional stage.

While expecting the completion of the work by the end of the year, he thanked Governor Obiano for his efforts to bring the hospital to a good shape.

Those who accompanied the Deputy Governor on the inspection include the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on General Hospitals, Dr. Nwamaka Oko among others.
