Africa charts a resilient future, launches 2024 state of the climate in Africa report

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Union Commission (AUC), and key regional and international partners, proudly announces the launch of the State of the Climate in Africa Report 2024.
This important event will take place today at the UNECA Compound in Addis Ababa, with opportunities for virtual participation, allowing a broader audience to engage with vital climate discussions.
The 2024 State of the Climate in Africa Report marks the sixth installment in a series that provides authoritative and science-based insights into climate trends, extreme weather events, and their impacts across the continent.
Developed through collaborative efforts involving National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs), UN agencies, and scientific experts, this report serves as a comprehensive resource for understanding Africa’s unique climate challenges and opportunities.

This year, the report emphasizes the significance of digital transformation as a critical tool for climate adaptation and resilience building.
As climate-related impacts intensify across Africa, the findings underscore the need for timely, accurate, and accessible weather and climate information. Such data is essential for effective decision-making, disaster preparedness, and sustainable development efforts, all of which are vital for the continent’s future.
The hybrid launch event features a diverse lineup of presentations and high-level statements from notable policymakers and climate authorities in Africa.
The session will be moderated by Dr. Agnes Kijazi, Director of the WMO Regional Office for Africa, who will guide discussions on the report’s key findings and implications.
Prof. Celeste Saulo, Secretary General of WMO, will deliver introductory remarks, setting the stage for an engaging dialogue on climate action in Africa. Following her, Mr. Fetene Teshome, President of Regional Association (Africa), will provide insights into regional climate strategies and collaborations that are shaping Africa’s response to climate change.
Dr. Ernest Afiesimama from the WMO Regional Office for Africa will present the report’s findings, highlighting critical trends and extreme weather events that have affected the continent over the past year. His presentation aims to inform stakeholders about the pressing climate issues that require immediate attention and action.
The event will also feature high-level statements from prominent figures, including Mr. Claver Gatete, the Executive Secretary of UNECA, and H.E. Moses Vilakati, AU Commissioner for Environment. Their insights will reflect the commitment of African leaders to tackle climate challenges while promoting sustainable development across the continent.
As the event concludes, Dr. Aderito Celso Félix Aramuge, RA I Vice President, will deliver closing remarks, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and innovation in addressing Africa’s climate challenges. The report’s launch marks a pivotal moment in the continent’s ongoing efforts to build resilience and ensure a sustainable future for all Africans.
