Abuja-Kaduna Train: NRC MD Opeifa conducts inspection over toilet complaints

By Temitope Adebayo

In a move to address public concerns and reinforce service standards, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, on Thursday, embarked on an unannounced inspection of the Idu Railway Station and the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) coaches.

The visit followed the circulation of a report alleging that all onboard toilets on the AKTS route were out of service, raising alarm over the poor maintenance of critical train facilities.

Determined to get firsthand information, Dr. Opeifa boarded the train and personally inspected each coach, focusing on the state of the toilets and general passenger amenities.

He was accompanied by senior officials and technical staff of the Corporation, who provided updates on the ongoing maintenance efforts, as well as the Corporation’s long-term improvement plans.

Speaking during the exercise, the NRC boss noted that while most of the toilets inspected were in working condition, there was still room for improvement.

“We take every feedback seriously—be it from the media or our passengers. Today’s visit is part of our commitment to transparency and to ensure that Nigerians receive the best possible service,” Dr. Opeifa said.

He commended the AKTS team and the cleaning contractors for their sustained efforts in recent months, stating that noticeable improvements had been recorded in the last five months.

Dr. Opeifa also encouraged passengers to continue making use of NRC’s complaint channels, assuring them of prompt attention to genuine concerns.

He further charged staff of the Corporation to adopt a more customer-friendly approach, noting that customer satisfaction remains central to the NRC’s operational goals.
