Attempts to forestall the recognition of the Igwe-elect of Ogidi Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State through the instrumentality of the judiciary has been temporarily foiled, the Daily Times reports.
The Daily Times recalls that Alex Onyido, a pharmacist and businessman was on August 27, 2016 unanimously elected by the members of Ogidi Union Nigeria.
The unanimous election of Onyido as the new Igwe-elect was in turn rejected by the Amobi family in Ogidi. The Amobi family that had for years produced all the former kings of the town.
Amobi family had insisted that Igweship of the community was hereditary or resides in with them and is not rotational.
The family had as part of effort to safeguard their alleged right also sought an order from the Anambra State High Court sitting in Ogidi, to restrain the president- general of Ogidi Union from recognizing the king-elect.
The experte motion also demanded the prevention of the state government from recognizing and issuing certificate of recognition to the new traditional ruler- elect.
Ogidi, the ancestral home of one of Nigeria’s literary giant, Late Prof. Chinua Achebe has for 19 years operated without a king.
