The groups had staged a protest against incessant violence, abuse, rape and murder of women in the country.

Gulma assured the protesters that the state government was committed to deal with the perpetrators of the heinous acts in order to serve as a deterrent to others.

“We are committed to ending the gender-based violence by drafting a law for onward transmission to the legislative arm of government for ratification.

“We assure you that as soon as the law is ratified, the ministry will ensure its implementation and enforcement,’’ the commissioner said.

Earlier, the leader of the groups, Hajiya Zara’u Ahmad, said that they were concerned with the state of the nation as regards abuse, domestic violence, rape and murder of women across the country.

“This protest became necessary in view of the increasing cases of rape incidences and domestic violence across the state.

“This ugly development has left many women and children devastated; and the offenders, oftentimes, escape justice or receive prosecution that do not commensurate with the offences they commit,’’ she said.

Ahmad urged the state government to ensure the speedy trial of perpetrators of gender-based offences for justice to prevail. (
